The silver willow in Haabersti is doomed anyway

Admirers` dances around the silver willow in Haabersti are humanly understandable, but are senseless. Because drainage, inevitable in the reconstruction of the traffic intersection, will lead to a change in the level of groundwater that the tree will not survive.

Experienced park manager Kadriorg Ain Jarve states that not only the creation of a massive concrete structure, but also the laying of an asphalt road inevitably leads to a change in the groundwater level, since the gravel base works as a drainage. Seventy years old root system of the Haaberst willow will not be able to adapt to this. The only possibility is to plant new trees, as envisaged in the draft.

As it was already reported, the change in the project means delaying its implementation for a year, increase in price by 1.5 million euros and the risk of losing funding from the European Solidarity Fund. Not to mention the lawsuits because of the privately owned land, through which a modified road route will have to pass.
