Days of the Old City: over the Town Hall Square, a cyclist will ride along the rope

On Tuesday, the program of the Days of the Old City was presented, which will be held from May 30th to June 3rd. At the opening of the Days of the Old City a bicyclist will ride over the Town Hall Square at an impressive height on the rope.

The Days of the Old City, the theme of which is "One Hundred Paces of the Century", are held for the 37th time in the jubilee year of the Republic of Estonia. The program consists of one hundred symbolic steps, that is, one hundred events that characterize the various events from 1918 to 2018.

"This year's program contains the moments of various stages of Estonia's history of the last hundred years - both joyful and sad," - said the elder of the Kesklinn region, Vladimir Svet. - In this case, the purpose of the Days of the Old City is not only to pay attention to the past, but also to comprehend the present. At one time, the Days of the Old City ended with night singing holidays, which played an important role in restoring Estonia's independence. Today the Days of the Old City are also connected with our state and what is happening in it."

Each day of the program of the Days of the Old City will be associated with a certain period of time in the history of Estonia: May 30th - "Happy National" (1918-1938), May 31st - "Under the Black Shadow" (1939-1955), June 1st - "Life as in cinema" (1956-1980), June 2nd - "Let's sing " (1981-1991) and June 3rd - "Changeable freedom" (1992-2018). The main organizer of the Days of the Old City is the head of the Hopner House, Anne Welt.

May 30th, at 19:00, at the Town Hall Square, on the occasion of the opening of the 37th Tallinn Days of the Old City, a performance will be held "Dream of the Century". The romantic performance, whose author and director is Vahur Keller, will talk about the people's desire for freedom through storm events throughout the whole century. During the performance, you can see an exciting spectacle: from the Pyhavaimu church to the Town Hall, a bicyclist will ride at an impressive height on the rope.

On Tuesday, a booklet with the program of the event, published in three languages, was also presented. From Wednesday it will be available at the tourist information point of the Days of the Old City, the Kesklinn district government, the Hopner House or information desks at Town Hall Square and Harju Street. The program can be found at

"Like the history of our country, the history of the Old City has not ended, it lives and develops, seeks new meanings and ideas. Let's go to the Old Town to become a part of it," - the Light called.

TALLINN - Experts from Finland, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands highlighted the importance of decentralization and granting local governments greater decision-making powers at a conference titled "Strong local government -- strong state?" in Tallinn on Wednesday.  All Nordic countries have chosen a model granting local governments significant decision-making powers, thus the central government does not prescribe how local governments are to fulfill the...

Nature cannot abide a vacancy, as the saying goes. If just one year ago, Estonia was battling the sale of MMS and the practice of giving it to children, a new “miracle cure” called Advanced TRS has appeared on the market now. Even though the make-up of the substance is different, the promise to cure autism and cleanse the body of heavy metals, which kind of extreme detox is accompanied by severe side-effects, sounds all too familiar. TRS is recommended to...
Allied NATO battalions will soon mark two years serving in the Baltics. They have worked better than expected but would need prepositioned heavy weaponry and a functional contingency plan in case of a crisis, a report by the International Center for Defense and Security (ICDS) finds. “We do not know how Russia would have acted had we not welcomed allies in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland in 2017. I’m afraid they would have tested our resolve,” one of...
The time of filing income tax returns is nearly upon us. The new income tax system, in effect since last year, will obligate many women who went on maternity leave toward the end of the year to make additional income tax payments, while those who give birth in the middle or at the beginning of the year have no such obligation. What this means is that some women will owe the state simply for giving birth “at the wrong time”. Laura Roop, who went on maternit...
